movie under the stars

What better way to spend a mild summer night than with a free movie & popcorn on a blanket on the lawn of the State Capital?
Beautiful night in the city:)

the school feeling

This morning I had a bit of what I have been longing for: 'real' school work.
Don't get me wrong I do love summer and I do my best to enjoy the unschooling life.  Part of the reason to home school is to have room for all those other lessons.  We have spent a good deal of time learning by living.  Time reading and writing.   Time playing games.  Time plundering the library's collection of odd documentaries and such.  But the minimal Summer School life has me on edge, deep within the doubt of; am I doing a good job? I feel like summer interrupted some great is all about balance which I think I have just now found.
But how out of nowhere did I manage to finagle a 9-1:00 session of school?
With plenty of planning.  I seized the opportunity to use a day which we normally have gym but the coaches are all away at a conference, sent the boys off to work, and let Boo the night before have a sleep-over (a special treat, I don't love them one bit) with the reminder: you have school in the morning.
We read.  We worked on words.
Enjoyed making a snack of frozen bananas dipped in melted chocolate.
We worked on simple math and our chemistry ring of elements.  Then back to reading.  When I cut her loose she gave me a big hug and said, "That was really fun, mom.  Can we do it again tomorrow?" Well, I don't know we have a movie under the stars at the State Capital tonight, Saturday swimming at the rec. center or perhaps a hike and Mad Science at the library, we have talked about the drive-in and a trip to Timp Cave, then there are the Farmer's Markets, basketball and bike riding like we did yesterday, don't forget the lake...of course we can, we can do anything we want.  That is the part I need to remember.  After all these years I still hear the school bell ringing.  I need to remember that bell isn't calling us and we don't need to get in line.

summer lessons

I am troubled by Boo's spelling.  She reads the words, she spells the words, but when it comes to writing she misspells a lot of words that I feel she know by now...
But we are so busy with life.
Gym is during the day for 4 hrs three times a week.
Her Step-Brother is here full time.
Summer is happening.
I miss quiet cool mornings doing studies.
I miss knowing exactly what we were working on.
But yesterday at the lake I watched her Kayak.
When did she learn that?!?!
Her Papa said he couldn't believe how well she knew the water and the strokes she needed.  Wow, think of the lessons comprised within Kayaking.  I have said this before sometimes she is the teacher and I am the student.
Please continue with your summer we are doing just fine.

walking through history & art

It is a pretty safe bet to say we are in a period of unschooling :)  That means our learning has stepped outside and is leaning towards the wilds of the west...
The meeting of the railroads: Golden Spike
The swearing in of a Jr. Ranger
The Spiral Jetty & the Great Salt Lake
The Salt Flats
Ghost Town Graveyards

The beauty of Utah's deserts
The Sun Tunnels
Chasing names like Donner and Hastings into the setting sun.
