mixing it up with math games: Pass the Pigs

If we had a list of the top 10 reason we love homeschooling having time to play games would defiantly be on that list.  It is especial fun to trade the old math workbook in for a game like Pass the Pigs.

Sure it's fun and silly but it can also be educational.  Reassign the point values to anything you need to work on like instead of positions being worth 5, 10, or 15 pts changed them to 3, 6, 9 pts...what about making them worth a fraction?  It turns each roll into a mini math problem. We have turned them into multiplication facts for those few pesky times tables we just couldn't seem to remember.  We assigned the positions the values of 6, 7, & 8. After a few rounds of figuring 6x6, 6x7, 6x8, 7x7, 7x8, 8x8, over and over she had them down. Want to learn Roman Numerals or Tally marks?  Keep score using them. Or chart the number of times each different combination of positions is rolled for a lesson in probability and graphing.

There are tons of great ways to tailor this little piggy game to fit right into your math curriculum.
